Travel Protection when CCW wont work
« on: April 08, 2015, 05:30:04 PM »
I am traveling tomorrow to Seattle for an interview.  While I was packing I thought I would write about my EDC(everyday carry) personal protection hardware when you cant or dont want to hassle with transporting your CCW hardware of choice with you.  Stop over and check it out.

I have several of the UltraFire 501B lights, they are awesome for the price.  You can find them direct from Hong Kong for under $10.  My first one for EDC use is over 3 years old.  What I like better than the SureFire or OLight is the 18650 rechargable battery.

I also have an UltraFire 501B light,
changed the LED unit in it a while ago to get rid of the multimode part
it is a fantastic light

also have many other kinds as well,
all of my favorites run on on the 18650

most of mine were cheep and free shipping from DX.com
(nothing I have ever ordered from the USA warehouse ever got to me. and about 1/4 of the regular ones never made it as well)
many other places with free shipping as well
the amazon and ebay ones always seem to show up.

if you can, get your light with springs to connect with the battery on each side.
and single mode lights mess up way less than multi mode

has lots of options and parts to go with it,
I even have a pressure switch end cap for mine

I like the one you linked to

was thinking of the WF-105B last night,
found all 4 that I have,
I have red, green, blue, and blacklight versions
but I don't have a white one,
it is not the best of my cheep flashlights either,
the trustfire TR-C2 is really my favorite due to the springs on each side of the battery,
even when running multimode chips it does not change mode when you shake it to hard (or when it gets old),
currently running a single mode Cree Q5 in it (runs on 3.7 to 18V)
would love a Cree XM-L LED for it

so why am I rambling on...
not sure

one other random thought is that most people can't really see with only blue light without practice
you get huge contrast and no color to speak of,
so it just confuses many people for quite a few min. when first using one
it can be handy to have a light that most people can't make full use of, but you have practiced, so you can.

I can't speak to air travel because I have all but abandoned that.  I can comment on carry where CCW is not allowed.  I drove to and through several states years ago that had such strict prohibitions against firearms that I thought long and hard about how to protect my loved ones in case of a roadside breakdown.
I now carry highway flares slipped down between the door and the front seat of the cars.  Now, if I am working on changing a flat tire and Hells Angels show up to "help", I simply strike up the flare and hold it casually in my hand while we converse.  When asked about it, I simply reply that I don't want us to all get run over by passing motorists.  It would be difficult to convince a court that I am acting in a threatening manner (as would be the charge if it was a handgun in my hand) and the look of molten phosphorous dripping from the end of the flare and burning into the pavement below might be enough to convince people to part on good terms with me rather than bear the scars of wisdom inherent in third degree burns.

Interesting concept.

You can legally "drive through" any state, but must follow the transport laws there.  I am working in Washington State 2 weeks a month and got my CCW here.  Checking a firearm is really no big deal when flying.  Just be sure of the laws where you are landing concerning the gun, lockable storage, ammo and the storage location in the vehicle.

I will be checking mine in my bag tonight heading back home.

some people have got in jail when the plane got diverted (for weather reasons) where they are not legal
with that and the TSA having any power at all, I just quit flying entirely

I love the road flare idea
