Name this antenna!
« on: February 13, 2012, 06:14:27 PM »
I was at the airport today and spotted a car with a setup that I think would do well with my vehicle.  Can someone tell me what this is?

looks like a screw driver antenna.

Assuming it is, there is literally a motor inside the tube that moves a tap along a coil to change the match point and subsequently the efficient operating point.  I see some control cables at the base (actually I see more than just coax) so its likely a screwdriver.

It could just be a loading coil for a certain band, possibly even CB...

I should also explain the name "screw driver antenna"... NO5E used to make a version of this antenna using an electric screwdriver...it was geared and had torque so it was perfect.  Since then a number of companies have produced variations on them.  I'm not sure who was first but the NO5E models used actual electric screw drivers to drive a thread rod and tap.

Interesting. He had an amateur radio license plate. When I get back home I will try to hit the guy up.

Maybe a Tarheel antenna. MG is correct, many companies make variations of the screwdriver.

How about the mount? It looks like it is just a plate under the ball to offset the antenna. Is that a home grown or store bought?

GDP has a trailer hitch mount on his pick-em-up truck that is perfect for this installation. He got it on ebay for about $30 if I remember correctly. I lost the link when my puter died awhile back, but I'm sure he will point you in the right direction. I am assuming you have a modern square hitch on your vehicle and not a ball hitch.

Well I found an email address for the owner and gave him a shout. It is a Hi-Q 6-80m.  Hams are pretty slick folks, he told me to give him a shout next week when we are both back in town.

I know I am jumping into an old thread here, but did you ever hook up with this guy?  Get any report on how he likes the antenna?  Their site makes some good claims, but they are a little pricey, curious how well they really work.
