Best weak signal chat mode ?
« on: November 03, 2015, 09:59:14 AM »
JT65 works good for weak signal work, but is basically useless for emergency comms since it doesn't allow for larger messages.  So what is a good weak signal mode that would allow for things like traffic and other emcomm messages ?

PSK31 does not need your computer clock update with the internet time severs before you use it like jt65 needs,
and you can send real data with psk31.
depending on conditions you might be just fine with higher speed data or need something that gets through the noise better
HELL and CW seem to cut through some noise like nothing else, but not the best at week signal
packet on VHF is very good if you are close with no noise

Been playing with FSQ after a recommendation from another group the other day and it looks like it is what I was looking for.  You can send messages to specified stations, send hi rez pictures and text files, it allows your station to act as a relay or you can relay through others, and I'm sure lots of other features.  You can download it here: http://www.qsl.net/zl1bpu/MFSK/FSQweb.htm  And FLdigi software has FSQ capability also, download it here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/fldigi/files/

I have FLdigi installed, and can't find any mode called FSQ, does it have another name ?
or is it some special mode it needs to be set to ?
I seem to be missing something here

FSQ is only on the latest versions of FLdigi, maybe you have and older version ?  But no, FSQ is what it is called on FLdigi.  But you can download the original FSQ program called "FSQcall" here: http://www.qsl.net/zl1bpu/MFSK/FSQweb.htm

I was only a tad behind the current one,
the current one has way more modes added.
they have 4 FSQ modes,
also downloaded the original software as well

lots of people don't have SSB radios,
by the look of it, you can use FM on VHF/UHF as well
any idea how well it would work with an FM only radio ?

Have not tried it on FM yet, but it would be short range at best depending on band.  Did play with receiving pictures over the weekend and that works pretty cool on 40 meters.

I don't have web service at home and I operate JT65. I just sync my clock manually while listening to WWV.
