What do the digital modes sound like?
« on: February 12, 2012, 10:26:46 AM »
Many newcomers to the Amateur Radio digital modes have yet to hear what the various digital modes sound like.  Or look like on their monitors.   I'm hoping that the following two examples may intrigue you.

Mode           Looks Like on Monitor                    Click to listen
Throb4X                             http://www.w1hkj.com/FldigiHelp-3.20/Modes/Throb4X.wav

Olivia 16/500                              http://www.w1hkj.com/FldigiHelp-3.20/Modes/Olivia16-500.wav

They sound pretty strange, right?  But the interesting thing is that your PC's sound card can be coerced into encoding (and decoding) those sounds.

Wanna be a shortwave listener (until you get your license, maybe?) and watch what the hams are into?  Be a spy!  Join NSA!  (I did, but that was over 40 years ago).  But, in any event, have fun; that's why we go to all the "trouble" of making such a large amount of frequency spectrum available to you.  For free!

OPSEC -- yes, we need a topic like that (here in digital) to explain the value of some of the digital modes for OPSEC purposes.

Modes like Feld Hell, for example, are just NOT going to be on anybody's radar any time soon!

OK, so here's a plea; who's up for doing an OPSEC topic, relating to use of the digital modes?

I am up for reading someone elses topic who is smarter than I am on it.. This thread actually motivated me to re-wire my signal link and go run some psk31.. Doing that now. Bands seem open into Europe.
The more I learn, the less I know.
