Looking for something to use with either FT-857 or TS-480 HX (have tuners for each) mobile on 40m .that will get me decent operation from say 30miles to 250 miles. Not interested in DX or other bands.   I drive a 2014 Jeep Wrangler 4dr,  Really dont want a tarheel type antenna. Want to stay simple as possible with decent results.  Suggestions please.

Going to be dificult in a mobile sit.

Most mobile will be a vert antenna like the tarheel you mention.

You can get a ground wave for the first few miles but past 50-ish you are going to blow right over it.

Military vehicles use some type of NVIS antenna.  Let me look for some references.....stand by.....

Here is one reference more to come .....

You will need to do more searching and will probably need to experiment to get something that meet your needs.

Thanks, there is a guy with a Jeep on another forum that was buying the antenna like shown in TX Army MARS figure 24.   He is supposed to do a review on it will see if I can find it again.

You could do a 102 inch CB whip with a base loading coil to resonate it on 40 meters, then bend it over and tie the tip down to get NVIS radiation.  I've done it before and it worked fairly well !
