Making up my mind on the Radio and Antenna
scubadivingjoe:
I have almost made up my mind on the radios that I would like to get.
The first one would be the Yaesu FT-60R, because it takes AA batteries and I hunt. I have a solar cell that can recharge the batteries if I need to.
The second one is the Yaesu FT-857D, I can use it as a base or mobile.
Now I need to look at antennas. I want to do local and long distance contacts. Now my problem, the place I live at right now does not allow any external antennas. So what ever I use I need to be able to hide it. Any suggestions?
Currently I am Studying for my exam.

Good choice. Same radios i have. I have a HOA that i have to hide from. I have 2 of these http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/hamwire/4456.html in 20 and 40 meters. They are hidden in a big pine tree in the front of my house.
There ae flag pole verticals, buddy sticks or even transworld antennas http://transworldantennas.com/

The FT-60r is a good radio. But i'd highly recommend reading the reviews on it:

As for antennas here is what I use:
For UHF/VHF: http://www.hamradio.com/detail.cfm?pid=H0-000022 It's worked great for me, you can get a smaller version too, and can be installed in an attic
For HF: http://www.hamradio.com/detail.cfm?pid=H0-008368 It's just a wire, and will do except 160m HF bands.. I have it strung through the trees, you'd never know it.
You could also get an:
http://www.hamradio.com/detail.cfm?pid=H0-005121 and put it in your attic along with the 2m antenna.

The most creative 'stealth antenna' I've seen was a Tarheel antenna mounted inside a Rubbermaid garden shed. The ham had cut a small hole in the roof of the shed for the antenna's 'stinger' to extend through. The remote control for the antenna was inside his ham shack. I think he had painted the stinger black so even when it was fully extended it was virtually invisible. Sheer genius.
Good luck with your test!
