Solar flux picking up so should your DXing
« on: June 29, 2012, 07:36:21 PM »
The latest ARRL news letter is showing a big increase in the solar flux index SFI from the low 90's where it has been stuck for a few week to 120 and above.

I made some of my longest DX contacts when the SFI was in the 150 plus range.   The bands really open up when the SFI increases. So fire up those radio on July 3-5 and see who gets the longest DX.

Here is what the ARRL news letter says for the forecast:

The predicted solar flux is 110, 115 and 115 on June 28-30, 120 and 125 on July 1-2, 130 on July 3-5, 135 and 140 on July 6-7, 135 on July 8-9, 130 on July 10-11, 125 on July 12-13, then 120, 115, 110 and 105 on July 14-17.

Solar flux may dip below 100 around July 19-28.

Look for more on the ARRL website on Friday, June 29. For more information concerning radio propagation, visit the ARRL Technical Information Service Propagation page here
http://www.arrl.org/propagation-of-rf-signals

Here is an example of the freq, time of day and where the east coast should be open to for the month of July.

The freq is left hand side, bottom is the time of day.   Look At the area between the green LUF and the green line 50% f the time freq will be at least this high.

Just checked the SFI is 166.  Looks like 10m is wide open during the daytime. 20 opens at night.  15-17M is open borh day and night.

If you have a 10 antenna fire that sucker up and see what the farthest QSO you can get.
The only dumb question is the one that did not get asked!!

It all depends on the bands

Got this this morning

Solar-terrestrial indices for 02 July follow.
Solar flux 166 and estimated planetary A-index 21.
The estimated planetary K-index at 2100 UTC on 02 July was 3.

Space weather for the past 24 hours has been moderate.
Radio blackouts reaching the R2 level occurred.

Space weather for the next 24 hours is predicted to be minor.
Radio blackouts reaching the R1 level are expected.

A little OT here, flog me if appropriate.

The homepage changed over the weekend.  It used to have a condensed solar chart on it at the very top, then click for forums.  Nice, got a quick look at Old Sol.

The change involved putting some recent posts and pics on top of a... long... page, then putting that solar chart at the very bottom of it.  Regular lookers here don't need to see the Chicom HT review more than a couple times (nothing against Chicom HTs, I own a Wouxon), but you get the drift?

I'd like to see the quickee solar chart come back to the top of the page.

No flogging necessary.  1911 can we make this happen?
