FT-530
« on: February 05, 2012, 08:15:09 AM »
I had a Yaesu FT-530 given to me a long time ago.
It still works but I have only used it to listen with.
Is this a good start? Or do I need something newer?
Thanks.

Any equipment is good equipment.  ;D .  From what little I know of the ft-530, I'd say it will work for 2m and 70cm especially if you can find a repeater close to you.  I still have a Kenwood th-79 that was my first radio.  Like you, I used it only for listening until I got my Tech.

You can use this site:  http://k5ehx.net/repeaters/qrepeater.php  to locate repeater information.

That radio will work fine. Start scanning the 2m/70cm band.. I'd recommend doing it around commute times when the most people are in their cars.

A free radio that you already have??  That's a GREAT start!  Listen to any conversations (QSOs) that you can monitor and pick up on the procedure, format, and some of the terms.  That'll give you a head start!

Bring it with you in the car too when you are going to and from work...

Spending 50-60$ to get a magnet mount and a smaller type antenna to mount on the roof of your vehicle would be money well spent too, that difference between even a cheap magnet mount outside on the roof, vs the rubber duck is dramatic!!

A magnet mount will not work.
I have a 2003 Jeep Rubicon soft top.
What antenna would be good to start with an where would be a good way to mount it?
Thanks.

Got a tire rack on back?  Your hood and fenders are metal. Lots of places. If you 4x4 a lot get a higher gain antenna with a foldover mount and mount it to the tire rack. You may need to run a few grounding straps from the to the frame.
The only dumb question is the one that did not get asked!!
