How do you know what the 2 meter frequency is in your neck of the woods or is it the same all over? How do you find out?

What are you in? You can use the repeater directory. 146.520 is the national simplex calling frequency.

National 2 Meter FM Simplex Frequency is 146.52 Mhz .... National SSB Simplex Frequency id 144.100 Mhz... Then you can Download the ARRL Repeater Directory for your ARRL Section, and it will list the FM Repeaters in your area and the PL Codes that they use. Just Say'en... YMMV...

You boys just dont pay attention do ya  ;D

http://k5ehx.net/repeaters/qrepeater.php

Depending on your radio amd the ability to CAT program it, this website will export a file that you can import into your programming software. I use the RT Systems for my FT-60 HT.

The only dumb question is the one that did not get asked!!

I was try to find out as I now have my 2 meter radio hooked up and had it scanning weather channels but didn't know what the frequency to start with . When I first turned it on and had it scanning I picked up a lot of stuff but I switched it back to the weather channels and now I have to start all over, but didn't know where to start, and I didn't want to just start pushing a bunch of buttons.

Just scan the entire band. from 144.00 to 148.00 see what you can hear. Drive times are usually the most active.

Big

Did you look at the K5EHX site? Each and every UHF/VHF and other freq. repeaters in your area.

Go to the geomsearch section and plug in your city and state and the list will show up. Freq, offsets and PL tone freqs.

If you are listening on 146.520 there is no programming. I don't remember if you are licensed yet or not, but if you are just key it up and toss your call out. No programming needed for the simplex frequency.

If you dont have the manual yet, here it is http://www.yaesu.com/downloadFile.cfm?FileID=628&FileCatID=150&FileName=FT%2D2800M.pdf&FileContentType=application%2Fpdf

Again, go the the http://k5ehx.net/repeaters/qrepeater.php site and put in your city and state.  All of the 2 meter (144 mhz- ish) freqs will appear in a list.  These are. The freqs you will want to scan.  Use the manual and try to program one in.

Come back here and ask questions.  Some one here probably has a Yaesu radio of that style that can probably walk you through programming.  Then you will only scan repeaters that are in range. You will sart to recoginize call signs and voices.

Get the radio programed and it will safe you a ton of time scanning

Have you started to study for your tests yet?

Not licensed yet still studying next fest around here is in apr. just listening and reading my radio manual. One thing I see is if you haven't used this stuff before it takes a bit to learn what all this stuff means, and at the same time not wanting to harm your equipment, heck I have never programed nothing before so some of the stuff is like reading chines .

It just takes time. It will all start to make since. If your willing to PM your phone number to someone here, they maybe able to help you program the radio.

You CANT screw up the radio. There is always the "reset to factory" function which make it like it was just out of the box.

Do you have the manual?

If you're lucky like me you'll get a Chinese manual instead of English...

How that happens, god knows, but I found the English version online and was good to go. This is coming from a guy who had no clue as to the first thing about radios. You just need to read through our manual. If you don't know something write it down and do a quick Google search later. After doing this a couple times you'll learn your basics. When you're on forums like this and read about a setting or feature that interests you, write that down as well so you can go to your manual later and look into it.

Once you get your license and you can actually use your radio for what it's made for, you'll learn a ton by just tinkering and using it. Don't worry about not understanding, this community has plenty of people out here to help you. Any questions need only to be asked and you will get probably more feedback than you could ever need.

Welcome to the "club" and the addiction that comes with it
