IRLP and handhelds
« on: February 08, 2012, 11:52:44 AM »
Sorry if this a newbie question and feel free to point to links rather than recreating the wheel if that works better. I have a 2M handheld and am curious how IRLP works with these? How do you send the IRLP node information and connect?
Thanks,

Here's a link to an article that explains it:

Basically the repeaters has an internet connection. It uses the internet and VoIP to connect to other repeaters over the internet. You key your handheld type in a code and the address/number of the remote repeater and it will connect you.

We have a guy in London that frequently dials into our local repeater here in town. He talks with us during our evening commute probably 3-4 times a week. He uses IRLP to do so. It's used to do linked repeaters nets a lot of times too.

Today during the statewide tornado drilled they used IRLP to link all the repeaters in the state.
The more I learn, the less I know.

VoIP is Voice over Internet Protocol.  This is basically the same as any audio streaming on Internet (radio, music, messenger, Skype).  It puts your conversation through a computer and onto the Internet for retrieval at the other end.

It's me again. I found a local repeater that runs IRLP (http://status.irlp.net/index.php?PSTART=11&nodeid=3990) and what I am wondering since all the documentation I find is around setting an IRLP node i.e. repeater is if I tune my radio to 147.230+ what needs to happen?
Do I push the PTT button and then enter a code on an my mike i.e. 3990 or something else?
Thanks,

Yes, you normally need to be a member of the club, in order to get the code to activate the IRLP link.
