Y857D, 2m repeat to simplex
« on: March 13, 2012, 10:53:14 AM »
Ok, after the extensive RTFB , will an 857, recieve on the repeater for 2m, retrans to simplex for local use around my house, and allow me to talk through the 857 to the repeater?

Anyone?  Anyone?  Bueler?  Bueler?

I am not sure what you are trying to ask.

857 can do repeaters and simplex. one at a time.
The more I learn, the less I know.

What i want to do, set the 857 to recieve the local repeater, but because of the repeater being on the far side of the house, my HT cant pick it up when Im in the garage or out front. I want to recieve on the 857, have it retransmit to a simplex freq so I can hear it when I cant hit the repeater. Its a very local solution. Like in my yard local.

But the book is vague about doing that.

the 857 will not do crossband repeat,
you need a dual band radio that has 2 VFOs and the feature built in to it
the Alinco DR-635T will do it just fine.

I have been thinking about this,
why don't you just run the antenna up on a mast like everyone else, then you will be able to talk to the repeater from where you want your radio,
also you can take off the faceplate on the radio and mount it somewhere else, and run wires back to the radio (2 CAT5 ethernet cables is enough wire).
I know someone that has the radio mounted where he parks his car, but has the faceplate in his bedroom where he can use it when sleeping... and for how ever odd that is, it is possible.

The Repeater must be a long way off, if the house attenuates the signal that much.... You might just build a remote Spk & Mic Station, in the Garage, that runs off the radio that is elsewhere... that would only take one pair of Cat5 Cable if you do it right....  Just Say'en......

If the repeater tower fell over, it would hit him on the head.  He is that close  :o
The only dumb question is the one that did not get asked!!

AD is right, it really would.

My issue, I want to be able to hear the repeater from my garage and living room. My house is 14 in adobe block, and in the back yard, on my HT its like talking to someone standing beside me, in the front I get nothing but noise. I dont know why, and I know it shouldnt matter being this close, but reality overwhelms theory in practice.

A wire run from the radio room to the garage would solve that, but its supposed to be wireless radio, not a telephone. And I may have something close creating interference in the front, which the house blocks. Which would tell me its a very weak or off band signal if it doesnt effect reception out back.

Solve one problem, find 3 more....my life story

ok, if the repeater is that close to you,
then you are likely having overload issues with the front end of your radio,
try using a dummy load as an antenna and see if that fixes the issue,
I have a few 50 ohm dummy loads with a BNC connector on them, they are small, and only deal with 1/4W of power
get one and then turn down your output power on your radio so you don't fry it,
they were popular to terminate the ends of the networking cable for computers back when they used coax for networks, so when you find them they are usually very cheep.
if not just try it with a bigger dummy load to see if that is what is going on

Thank you HS and SC

My house is adobe, but interior is chicken wire and concrete with plaster . So, I figure the wire is what is making the 2m output from inside impossible to get to the repeater

Bruce, love your idea, handier inside than in the yard though.
